Clipping GTA 6 on console

GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X

The short answer

On PS5, set the recent-gameplay length to 15 minutes before launch day, press Create and choose Save Recent Gameplay when something happens, trim on the console, then pull the file to your phone through the PlayStation App or a USB drive. On Xbox Series X|S, set the Share button to Record what happened in Capture & share. Crop to 9:16 on your phone, label story spoilers, and post only footage you are allowed to use.

Checked 13 October 2026 against Sony, Microsoft and Rockstar support pages, linked at the bottom.

Why console capture matters for this launch

Rockstar's GTA VI page lists 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version has been announced. That leaves two sources of GTA 6 footage in launch week: gameplay you record on your own console, and streams from creators who have given you permission to clip them.

Both start the same way. A moment you did not save is gone, because the console only keeps a rolling window. Set the window before the 19th and practise the button press on GTA V or any other game now, so it is muscle memory by launch night.

GTA 6 roleplay is a separate question with no date. Roleplay runs on PC, Rockstar has announced no PC version, and it has never announced GTA 6 support for Cfx.re or FiveM. Plan around story mode and creator streams.

PS5: set the buffer before launch day

Sony's PS5 records your recent gameplay in the background all the time. You choose how much of it a save keeps, from the last 15 seconds up to the last hour.

  1. Open Settings, Captures and Broadcasts, Captures, Shortcuts for Create Button, then Length of Recent Gameplay Video Clip.
  2. Pick a length you can actually review. Fifteen minutes catches a whole mission beat without filling your storage. One hour is there for a long session you plan to cut later.
  3. In the same Captures menu, set the video file type and resolution. Phone editors open MP4 more reliably, and a 4K capture is a bigger file you will crop down to vertical anyway.
  4. When something happens, press Create and choose Save Recent Gameplay. To record from now on instead, choose Start New Recording and press Create again to stop; a recording can run up to an hour.

Sony also notes that some scenes are blocked from capture, so a cutscene may come out missing from a saved clip. That is the game's setting, not a fault on your console.

Getting the clip onto your phone

Edit on your phone if that is where you are fastest. There are two routes off the console.

RouteWhat it movesWatch for
PlayStation App, auto-upload onGameplay videos under 3 minutes that are not 4K, plus screenshots taken with CreateUploads stay in the app for 14 days. Download the ones you will use, from Library, then Captures.
PlayStation App, manual uploadOne capture you pick in the Media Gallery, with OptionsSame 14-day window. Trim long clips on the console first.
USB driveLong or 4K captures the app will not takeCopy from the Media Gallery, then move the file to your phone or computer.

Trim on the console before you move anything. A 15-minute save holds one 40-second moment; cut it down to a minute around that moment and the transfer takes seconds instead of a coffee break.

Xbox Series X|S: Record what happened

On Xbox Series X|S the Share button does the work. Open Settings, Preferences, Capture & share, choose what a press of the Share button does, and set it to Record what happened if you want one press to save the last stretch of play. Start recording records forward from the press instead.

The longest clip the console allows depends on the resolution you capture at and the storage you save to, and the third-party guides disagree on the exact limits. Read the numbers on your own console's Capture & share screen before launch day rather than trusting a figure from a blog. Clips you upload to the Xbox network show up in the Xbox app on your phone, which is the quickest route into a phone editor.

Cropping GTA 6 for a vertical feed

Console footage is 16:9 and the feeds you post to are 9:16, so every clip is a decision about what to keep. Make it on purpose.

  • Follow the action, not the centre. Keyframe the crop when a car or a character leaves the middle of the frame. A static centre crop loses the moment the camera pans.
  • Decide about the HUD. The minimap and prompts sit in the corners and fall out of a vertical crop. Keep a corner only when it explains what happened.
  • Leave the bottom fifth clear. Captions and the platform's own buttons land there. Put your caption above it and check it on a phone, not on the editing screen.
  • Open on the reason to watch. Cut the walk-up. The first second shows the car, the line or the crash the clip is about.

The clip workspace lets you plan the crop and check a draft against a brief before you post.

Spoilers in launch week

A large share of the people watching GTA 6 clips in the first week have not finished the story, and many are still waiting for their copy. A clip that gives away an ending in its title or first frame burns the people most likely to follow you.

  • Keep endings, deaths and twists out of titles, captions and the opening frame.
  • Put a spoiler label in the first second when a clip shows story content past the opening.
  • Driving, the map, the city, character moments and reactions travel without spoiling anything. Lead with those in week one.

A RUCKUS brief states its spoiler rule. When a brief is silent, ask before you post story content from it.

The footage rules, read straight

Rockstar's policy on posting copyrighted Rockstar Games material, last updated 10 January 2025, gives individual fans permission for occasional, non-commercial use of in-game footage. It defines non-commercial as not making money through the footage and not using it to promote a product or service, and it sends licensing requests to Take-Two to consider case by case.

Posting your own gameplay for fun sits inside that permission. Paid clipping and promotional posts sit outside its written terms, so they depend on the rights holder's tolerance and on each platform's rules. That is a real business risk, and the buyer and the clipper both carry it. A RUCKUS brief names the footage that is cleared, who cleared it and for which use. Read the policy itself rather than a summary, including this one.

A creator's stream is the creator's work as well as Rockstar's game. Clip it with the creator's permission or inside a brief they funded, credit them, and disclose a paid post out loud at the start of the video when anyone pays you to make it. The FTC Endorsement Guides put that duty on the poster.

Your launch-week setup, in order

  1. Set the PS5 recent-gameplay length or the Xbox Share button this week.
  2. Turn on PlayStation App auto-upload, or find the Xbox app's captures, and move one test clip to your phone.
  3. Make one finished vertical clip from GTA V or another game, start to finish, and time yourself.
  4. Save a caption style and three opening lines you can reuse.
  5. Write your own spoiler rule down before the 19th.
  6. Read the campaign checklist so a brief's terms are familiar when one opens.

No paid RUCKUS campaign is open yet. The campaign board lists one when a buyer has funded it, and it says so when none exist.

Questions, answered

Can I clip GTA 6 on PC?

Not yet. Rockstar has announced GTA 6 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. A capture card into a PC still works for recording console footage, and it records long sessions without the console's own limits, but it is optional.

Can I clip GTA 6 roleplay?

No GTA 6 roleplay exists to clip, and no date has been announced. GTA V roleplay is live: NoPixel V entered a closed beta on the Rockstar Games Launcher on 8 September 2026, as Dexerto reported, and FiveM servers run on GTA V. Clip those with the streamer's permission.

How long should the PS5 buffer be?

Long enough to catch a moment you only notice afterwards, short enough to review. Fifteen minutes suits most play. Longer saves cost storage and time spent scrubbing for the one moment you wanted.

Will a GTA 6 clip get claimed or muted?

Licensed music is the usual trigger, so radio stations and soundtrack moments are where clips get muted. Cut around a track or mute it yourself. Use of the footage itself is governed by Rockstar's policy above and by each platform's rules.
